After a few snowstorms in winter, I have to tell you that I’m not too excited to go for a run in the snow. We are lucky that we have some tips and accessories to go there and make this snowy outing a little more runnable.

Here are some tips for running in the snow:

  • Use non-slip soles .

Yaktrax soles provide traction and confidence for winter running. They are loaded directly over your running shoes, without adding weight. Spikeless spools provide solid, predictable traction so they won’t fall or slip.

  • Try out snowshoes.

Mix up your workouts and try other types of workout with a pair of snowshoes. If you can run, you can snowshoe. Several places that rent skis also rent snowshoes, so you can try this if you like it before you buy any.

  • Add screws to your shoes.

Some runners have found the solution to run on snow and ice. They insert screws into their running shoe soles. Watch this video on YouTube on How to Make Your Own Snow / Ice Running Shoes (English).

  • Get some trail shoes.

If you run in the snow a lot, you might want to invest in a pair of trail running shoes, which are often waterproof and give you a little more traction on the snow.
