Now that we have moved the clock back, I find it a little more difficult to run outside. My jogging hour between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. is over for the winter, because it gets dark very early. I will only run when it is dark if I am running with people or in a well-lit area. If not possible, I will fix my schedule to run for lunch or jump on the treadmill during the evening.

And then you? If you absolutely must run in the evening, in the dark, or at sunset, here are some tips to stay safe:

  • Choose a well-lit road. It may not be your preferred route to run, but the most informed is the safe choice. Motorists can see you better, and you will be able to see the road to avoid a hazard.
  • Run against the traffic. It’s easier to avoid a car if you can see it coming. Do not go running on busy roads or those without shoulders or sidewalks.

  • Be visible. Wear yellow, white or orange, but that’s not enough; you must wear reflective clothing. Even if some items (shoes, coats) already have reflective items on them, it’s good to add a reflective jacket on top. I know runners who come out with lights in their hand. A headlamp can be an ideal option for those who often run in the dark.
