If you’re one of those people who keeps running outside despite the winter cold, gusty winds, or even snowy roads, you’ve probably heard this more than once: “Why would you go- do you run in this temperature? Or, you are the person asking the question …

Even if you are new to running, there are ways to “train your brain” to run through the winter months. Try these ideas:

  • Run with a group or a friend . Find a local jogging group or recruit a friend to run with you. Knowing that there is someone waiting for you to go for a run will help you stay motivated to tackle these conditions.
  • Wear the right clothes . Wearing running clothes that are designed for the cold will make a big difference when it comes to comfort and motivation level. Even though winter running clothing is expensive, a few quality pieces are worth the investment.

  • Be prepared to run or train indoors . Sometimes it is just too dangerous to run outside, such as when it is extremely cold or slippery. On the other hand, if you miss a few runs due to bad weather, it’s very tempting to skip winter all together, keep your habit of running on a treadmill or doing other indoor workouts.
  • Register for a race . Taking a road race during the winter is a great way to ensure that you are going a) stay motivated to stay in shape and b) run outside, at least occasionally (for your race).
