I am guilty of “taking on the worst” when I have a racing accident. I feel some pain in my foot in my big toe and I think, “Oh no, a stress fracture.” Fortunately, I just overreact to my injury and it goes away on its own or with some treatment. But how do you know when to watch out for your running injuries and see a healthcare professional?

Most running injuries heal well with RICE treatment : rest, ice, compression, elevation, and take about two weeks to heal. But it’s time to see a doctor if any of your pain lasts longer than that, if it comes back periodically, or if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain that spreads to another area of the body
  • Pain in a joint or bone
  • An injury that is very painful to the touch
  • Significant swelling close to pain
  • Difficulty moving the injured part
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the area

Honestly, this is not to be overlooked, as your pain could worsen quickly and create a more serious injury than it was when it started. You might be like me and you don’t feel like going to the clinic waiting and would rather pay for fast service no matter what, professional diagnosis should be considered so you can run smoothly, longer …
