In every marathon that I have either run or watched, I have always seen a few people walking the last few miles, complaining that their legs are cramping. Some runners also experience muscle cramps towards the end of their long training runs. Often the culprit is dehydration, so it’s important that you are hydrated properly before, during and after your long runs and road racing.

To avoid these painful muscle cramps, you need replace sodium and other electrolytes lost through sweat, so it is especially important that you make sure that you are consuming sports drinks if you are running for more than 90 minutes.
